Valley We Love: ISBN |
Isabelle Adams Swantak and Elisabeth Post declared their motivation for writing this book in the title they chose: The Valley We Love: Township. Loving and knowing are inextricably linked, and the authors wanted others to know, and therefore love, Township Valley as they did. This history of Township Valley blends personal experience, oral history, and recorded fact to paint a portrait of home. Swantak and Post covered everything they could in this history, from the arrival of the first settlers to the names of their neighbors in 1979. It is a detailed account of a very specific place, but by extension that account describes other places of a similar era: the materials required to make a dress in 1900 in Township were probably much like those needed anywhere else. Lists of supplies purchased or goods sold, lists of students, photographs, and maps weave a tapestry of details sometimes quite unexpected, like an 1824 shipment of 400 clams to the Township store of John Griffin, at a time when much of the area must have been nearly a wilderness. The Valley We Love is a warm and loving look at a place and its people. Isabelle Adams Swantak and Elisabeth Post have left a legacy of affection through their efforts to record the legacy of place they inherited. “We have found that when one has an appreciation of the natural beauty of an area and an intense interest in its history there is a genuine pleasure in researching and recording facts. This section was home for our pioneer ancestors and, even when we were absent at times, it has always been home for us. |
